Our Legal Team Represents Lawyers.ge at the EUIPO International IP Mediation Conference in Malta

Malta, October 2025

Nino Tatoshvili, Managing Partner of Lawyers.ge, represented Georgia and the Georgian Lawyers for the Independent Profession (GLIP) at the International Intellectual Property Mediation Conference organized by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in Malta in October 2025. The conference gathered leading intellectual-property, mediation, and regulatory experts from across the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and associated jurisdictions, making it one of the most important global forums for the future of intellectual-property protection.

The European Union is currently redesigning how intellectual-property disputes are resolved. The shift away from slow, expensive litigation toward international mediation is reshaping how trademarks, patents, digital assets, and software rights are enforced across borders. For Georgian companies exporting to Europe and for international investors operating through Georgia, these changes are both immediate and practical.

Why the Malta Conference Matters for Georgian and International Businesses

At the Malta conference, EUIPO experts and international practitioners analyzed how mediation is now being used to resolve disputes involving trademarks, patents, geographical indications, and digital intellectual property. Special focus was given to the use of artificial intelligence in IP risk assessment and mediation strategy, as well as to the growing integration between national courts and mediation institutions across Europe.

These developments mean that businesses no longer need to rely solely on long court proceedings. Instead, companies can now protect their brands, technology, and inventions through fast, enforceable, and internationally coordinated mediation systems — even when disputes involve multiple countries.

By participating in this EUIPO forum, Nino Tatoshvili ensures that Lawyers.ge is aligned with the legal tools and procedures that European regulators, courts, and IP offices will apply in the coming years.

Georgia’s Integration into the European Patent and Trademark System

The Malta conference also highlighted Georgia’s growing integration into the European and international IP framework. This is particularly significant following Georgia’s 2023 Validation Agreement with the European Patent Organisation, which allows European patents to be recognized and enforced in Georgia. As a result, foreign innovators can protect their inventions in Georgia using the European patent system, while Georgian companies can access EU-grade IP protection for their technologies.

This legal integration makes Georgia an increasingly attractive jurisdiction for technology companies, R&D centers, and international brand owners.

Nino Tatoshvili Among Georgia’s First New-Generation Patent Attorneys

This international engagement is reinforced by a historic domestic reform. Nino Tatoshvili is among the 28 candidates who successfully passed Georgia’s new national qualification examination for patent attorneys, the first such examination held since 2014.

The exam was conducted under the new Law on Patent Attorneys of Georgia, adopted by Parliament on 15 May 2024, which modernized the profession and aligned it with European and international standards. The examination was organized in cooperation with the Training Center of Justice of Georgia, with exam materials prepared by Georgian and foreign experts recommended by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO).

Certificates were officially awarded by Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti, marking the creation of a new, internationally qualified generation of Georgian patent attorneys.
