Criminal representation from investigation to appeal

A police interview, detention hearing and contested trial call for different work. Tornike’s representation covers these stages as a connected case: understanding the allegations, examining the material behind them and preparing the client’s response. He assists Georgian citizens and foreign nationals in Tbilisi and elsewhere in Georgia.

Investigation, detention and bail

Representation during questioning, searches and other investigative steps, as well as preparation for detention and bail hearings. The work addresses the individual allegations and the material available in the case.

Evidence, trial and review

Examination of witness accounts, expert findings, electronic communications and financial records. Trial preparation, plea discussions, appeals and cassation are considered in light of the client’s case and instructions.

Financial cases and victims of crime

Defence and representation in fraud, property and business-related criminal matters. For victims, assistance includes organising supporting material and preparing submissions to investigators, prosecutors and courts.

Juvenile and international matters

Juvenile-justice work, representation of foreign nationals, and criminal matters involving another country. His broader practice includes extradition and INTERPOL-related proceedings, alongside Georgian court representation.

Case preparation and evidence

The useful questions in a criminal file are specific: what does a document establish, where does an account conflict with another record, and which issue needs a response at the next hearing? Tornike’s work includes analysis of case materials, preparation of motions and complaints, and participation in investigative procedures.

Depending on the matter, the material may include messages, recordings, expert reports, contracts or banking records. He examines how it relates to the allegations and the position to be presented. His practice covers violent and property offences, drug cases, cybercrime, privacy-related offences and economic crime, as well as representation of crime victims.

Legal education and professional background

Tornike studied law at Ilia State University, completing an LL.B. and an LL.M. specialising in Criminal Law. He has practised criminal law since 2020. His qualifications also include juvenile-justice certification for criminal cases.

Tornike founded Chikovani Law Office and leads the firm as managing partner. Its wider services include civil and commercial disputes, administrative, property and employment matters, immigration and business law, as well as tax, FinTech, crypto-asset and VASP matters. This work provides context where criminal allegations overlap with a transaction, company activity or a foreign client’s other legal affairs in Georgia.

Mentoring future lawyers

The Georgian Bar Association lists Tornike as a Mentor Lawyer in its Professional Adaptation Program. The role involves helping future lawyers turn legal study into the skills used in day-to-day practice.

His mentoring work includes reading criminal files, analysing evidence, developing a defence position and drafting procedural documents. It also covers client communication, preparation for investigative steps and hearings, courtroom advocacy and professional ethics. The emphasis is on being able to explain and support a legal position, as well as knowing the relevant law.

Communication with Georgian and international clients

Tornike works in Georgian, English and Russian. For clients who are outside Georgia or unfamiliar with the local proceedings, the initial discussion can establish the stage of the case, the documents already received and the people or authorities involved. Professional interpretation in other languages can be arranged where needed.

His work with international matters includes cases involving foreign nationals, evidence or transactions connected with another jurisdiction, and the practical coordination needed for representation before Georgian authorities.
